ECO | ENVIRONMENTAL CARE ORGANIZATION

Typography/Layout | Photography | Infographics | Concept Building

At the start of this project I was given a forty or so page text document with absolutely no formatting whatsoever; line breaks in incorrect places, and no type hierarchy to be found. This was all of the written content of an annual report for an unnamed environmental law firm. With this content, the goal was to name the organization, create an identity for it, and use that identity to inspire the layout and typographic choices for the entire report. The most challenging part of this project was cleaning up and organizing all of that text into cohesive sections with a clear type hierarchy.

I decided to name my law firm ECO, Environmental Care Organization, because I wanted the name to have a strong acronym that is able to get across the same idea that the long form name does. What inspired my logo and styling choices was the idea of technology and the environment working together, instead of against one another. The logo is a nature scene built out of angular shapes to show this idea of cohabitation, and I carried the idea through into the full spread title pages within the report. All of the photography has to be taken by us, so I utilized sweeping landscapes for these page spreads and placed the geometric shapes in ways that would flow with each given scene. I utilized this same illustration style for the infographics as well.

I made the choice to have a large sized, saddle stitched book so that the full spread images would have a more meaningful impact on the reader. Not only that, but seeing as annual reports aren’t always the most interesting reading material, I thought the larger size would help keep the reader engaged in the content, instead of growing tired of it. To further solidify the idea of protecting the environment, the book was printed on recycled paper.
